Carnegie Bangor Library

Carnegie Bangor Library

T&A Kernoghan worked with the South Eastern Education & Library Board to carry out refurbishment and extension works to Bangor Carnegie Library.

The building was originally constructed almost a 100 years ago therefore challenges relating to returning the facility to its original glory but at the same time ensuring an adequate degree of modernisation were reflected in the project brief.

The project brief was to provide Bangor and its wider community with a ‘State Of The Art’ library, whilst maintaining the historical value of the original Carnegie Building. The objective was to be achieved not only by extending the footprint of the building from 1200 square metres to 2050 square metres but by also refurbishing the existing fabric and structure of the building with due cognisance at all times being given to its history.

As well as renewing the fabric of the building in keeping with it’s own individual history the works associated with the internal refurbishment brought facilities up to a standard necessary for todays end users in terms of comfort, access and facilities. Facilities included wi-fi access, e-information services, 50 public access computers, large performance and gallery space, extensive safe environment for children and young people as well as lots of space for reading, study and contemplation.
