Social Housing

Newtownbreda, Belfast

Works comprised of the construction of 39nr dwelling including extensive civil engineering works and all associated siteworks on a brown field site at Newtownbreda. The development is a mixed housing scheme integrating social housing general needs with category one supported housing needs for the elderly.

The development consisted of twelve pairs of semi-detached house and one detached house allocated to the general needs social sector, and a three storey apartment block with fourteen dwellings allocated to elderly housing needs. Given the end users of this project it was imperative that their needs and requirements were considered and implemented into the scheme.

All dwellings are built to the Lifetime Home Standards and acquired an Eco home ‘good’ standard. All end users have level access, carparking within two meters of the front doors of the houses/apartment block, a canopy at the front door, a fully functional wc at ground floor which meets wheelchair standards and additionally, future chair lift infrastructure and ground floor shower provision have also been incorporated into the design for end users. These design considerations have been made to meet immediate and future needs of end users for years to come.

Due to the high standard of this project, in 2008 it won the Social Housing Category in the annual Construction Employers Federation awards.
