Palmerston Residential /EMI Nursing Home
This was as a phased project relating to the expansion and redevelopment of an existing occupied residential facility for the elderly and those with special needs due to conditions such as dementia.
Based on a combination of both security and safety for the residents specific features were installed as part of the project e.g. a sprinkler system was installed as this would compensate for the additional time it would take to evacuate a facility in the case of the fire. Based on a specification by an Interior Designer a number of elements associated with the finishes were geared towards the needs of the residents e.g. feature walls with contrasting colour and distinct contrasts from floor finishes in order to break up the space. As the works was phased enabling works were carried out at the start of the project to compensate for any space lost in that a temporary car park and bin store were formed
As previously stated the management of public impact was key to the success of this project and the Contractor / Client relationship. Through 'systems of work' such as traffic management plans, waste management plans and daily consultation with the Client representative on site, the Facilities Manager, T&A Kernoghan were able to execute this project to the extreme satisfaction of the client.
This project was shortlisted as a finalist in the Health Infrastructure Category in the annual Construction Employers Federation Awards 2010.
